Protecting the tax-exempt status of non-profit hospital requires renewed attention in light of recent governmental challenges. How do you protect the hospital's exemption and the managers and board of directors from personal liability? In this two part series, nonprofit hospitals will learn of the current challenges to tax-exempt status under federal and state law and the hospitals will be presented with best practices for complying with the new governance guidelines in the aftermath of Enron, WorldCom and Sarbanes-Oxley.

Protecting your tax-exempt status in light of the new challenges. In this session, exemption and charity care requirements will be outlined for nonprofit hospitals. Potential personal liability will be reviewed for insiders of the hospitals, including board members and certain physicians for various types of transactions. An outline for an exemption/charity care audit will be provided.
