There has been a great deal of confusion among healthcare providers about the circumstances under which Advanced Beneficiary Notices (ABNs) must be used to comply with applicable Medicare payment rules. This presentation will discuss the circumstances under which ABNs are required and, from an operational perspective, how to use them effectively and efficiently within a variety of clinical settings. With the Office of the Inspector General and others increasingly focused on issues related to patients being held responsible for services denied for coverage by the Medicare program and ongoing difficulties in securing adequate orders for diagnostic and other services, the use of ABNs is growing evermore important from a compliance and from a payment perspective.
